Seasonal thoughts

posted Monday, 6 December 2004

We've lived in this little hillside house for nine years now, but still the seasonal differences between Greece and England catch me on the hop.
The sheep, which lamb in an English springtime, give birth here in November and December as well as in time for Easter celebrations.
Winter rain, followed by sunshine, has brought two solid green rows of rocket seedlings up through the moist soil. Just eight days after sowing. Aptly named.
Geraniums have revived from the scorching summer and are blazing red on green velvet.
My confusion is not helped by an immigrant robin. It flashes orange among the fig leaves. If it strikes a Christmas card pose on that garden fork . . .

Yes. It was taken last December. Our neighbour Skevos, higher up the hill, is a shepherd. You can just see the small island of Telendos, which our house faces.
