Occasionally, our Greek satellite TV service, Nova, tosses some crumbs of cake. These have included Sopranos and Six Feet Under (I’m still waiting for Seinfeld and The Simpsons!).
Last year, a few episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm slipped unannounced into the schedules and made such an impact that I bought the DVD of the first series.
It’s a gem. A three disc package containing 10 half hour episodes, (8 watched so far - I’m pacing myself), the one hour long HBO special that launched the series and a thirty minute interview.
Larry David, real-life co-creator and executive producer of Seinfeld, is, to quote the blurb, ‘a walking victim of misunderstandings and missed opportunities’. He has gathered together a great team of improv performers, headed by Cheryl Hines and Jeff Garlin, to give the viewer thirty minute bursts of outright and sometimes toe-curling hilarity. Episode 8, for example, revolved around a funeral, a typo in the newspaper obituary written by Larry misspelling the word ‘aunt’ in ‘beloved aunt’ by a letter two up in the alphabet and the mother from hell of his best friend accusing him of ‘feeling her up’. You can fill in the blanks . . .
If it seems like your line of humour, go out and buy. All 6 1/2 hours of it.
Incidentally, Amazon.co.uk has it for a bargain £10.97
